Black pepper

A flowering vine in the Piperaceae family called black pepper (Piper nigrum) is grown for its fruit, which is typically dried and used as a spice and seasoning. The fruit is a drupe (stonefruit), and it is dark red, about 5 mm (0.20 in) in diameter (fresh and fully mature), and it has a single pepper seed inside of a stone. The Malabar Coast of India is home to the black pepper plant, which is also widely grown there and in other tropical areas. It is one of the most widely used spices and one of the most traded spices in the world. The chemical compound piperine, which is distinct from the capsaicin present in chili peppers, is responsible for its spiciness.
