Star Anise

The Chinese evergreen tree Illicium verum produces fruit that is used to make the spice known as star-shaped spice or star anise. It has a flavor reminiscent of licorice and is aptly named after the star-shaped pods from which the spice seeds are extracted. Star anise is well-known for its therapeutic properties in addition to its distinctive flavor and culinary uses.
